The News from Whispering Pines

Mr. and Mrs. Lenard Brewer spent a quiet Sunday taking care of chores and getting ready for the work week to come. They were pleased they'd done outdoor work yesterday since today's weather was rainy and cold. Mrs. Brewer finished the wash while Mr. Brewer cleaned the cat's litter box and gave Daisy a bath. Going downstairs to retrieve her last load of jeans from the dryer, Mrs. Brewer found Mr. Brewer snoring in his easy chair while Don Williams crooned "Lord, I Hope this Day is Good" on the television. Daisy, fresh from her bath, was lying feet up on his lap. Missy, the cat, was sleeping on the back of his chair. Mrs. Brewer thought about how peaceful they all looked, resting on a Sunday afternoon. She thought about the routines of daily life, and how comforting they can be. This poem by Arthur Guiterman came to her mind:

Routines

No matter what we are and who,
Some duties everyone must do.

A poet puts aside his wreath
To wash his face and brush his teeth,

And even Earls
Must comb their curls,

And even Kings
Have underthings.

Mrs. Brewer fixed left-ever porkchops with a lettuce salad for supper. THe Brewers finished out the evening watching a movie on the television, "Cadillac Records". A pleasant day was spent by all.
