Brewer Garden Report: Harvest

Life in North Dakota is all or none. When the garden vegies are ready, that's it. The window of opportunity slams shut almost as soon as it opens. The planting moon turns into a harvest moon faster than the time it takes for me to find the hoe.
North Dakota gardens need to be fast and furious. And there in lies the problem. Too much in a short time! We can't eat that many vegetables in one or two weeks. And I'm not a canner or freezer woman. ( I know I should be, the pioneer homesteading genetics are there, but I got the outlier lazy gene as well.) So I bend over the green peas, snap open the pods and eat them right there in the garden, tossing away the shells. Stuffing my mouth with the taste of summer! That and snatching plump red cherry tomatoes off the vine, biting in and tasting not just summer, but somehow, life everlasting.

  1. I totally get you on this matter! I think I shocked a few people the other day when I said I couldn't wait for snow to cover up our yard so I don't have to feel so guilty about not spending the time on it that it requires to live up to its full potential. Apparently I like to do things well or not at all...to often it turns out that I choose the not-at-all route.
