The News from Whispering Pines

The past several weeks have found Mr. and Mrs. Brewer very busy attending family events. And what a beautiful time of year for celebrations of every sort! When the weather cooperates the outdoors in autumn is a perfect arena of color and temperature for a party. Last week-end Mr. and Mrs. Brewer motored to Velva, ND to attend the wedding nuptials of Pam's cousin's daughter, Kara.

It was a glorious occasion full of joy and laughter, but there were solemn moments as well. The quilt on the wall behind the bride and groom was started by the bride's grandmother. She died before she was able to complete it so her daughter, Colleen, did the finishing and presented it as a posthumous gift from her grandmother Kathryn. All in attendance remembered Kathryn (Mrs. Brewer's aunt) as a kind, loving woman who put her family first above all else. Her presence was felt that night in the love of her surviving husband, her children and grandchildren, sister, nieces and nephews, and in-laws.

Not to be ones to let grass grow under their feet, this past week-end Mr. and Mrs. Brewer motored to Fargo to visit their children and grandchildren. Mr. Brewer had a grand surprise when on Saturday evening extended family members started showing up at his son Shane's home. What he thought was going to be a small gathering of 6 people turned into a surprise birthday party for Mr. Brewer with about 25 people! His sister and brother and their children and spouses and grandchildren descended upon Shane and Lisa's home to help Mr. Brewer celebrate his 50 something birthday.

Photos were taken with all of the nieces and nephews. Following are a few:

Mr. Brewer remembers when he bounced his nieces and nephews on his knee and taught then honky-tonk country music tunes to sing along with him. Now they're all grown up and have children of their own. It meant the world to Mr. Brewer that they made time on a Saturday night to eat some of his famous BBQ'd ribs and wish him a Happy Birthday.

Mrs. Brewer's son and his wife, Jenilee, joined in the celebration as well.

Next stop was the Sunday night birthday celebration of Mrs. Brewer's niece, Whitney. The family gathered at the home of Darrel and Teresa Loftesnes for a meal of loaded baked potatoes. And loaded they were; with chili and cheese and broccoli and onions and sour cream and butter. Teresa served chocolate cake with ice cream for dessert which made it difficult for folks to keep their pants buttoned!

The beautiful birthday girl with her parents and the cake. (Don't ask about the candles, just take the author's word for it that she's 23.)

On the drive back to Whispering Pines from Norwich Mr. and Mrs. Brewer agreed that although they were bordering on exhaustion and the work week was only hours away, they were filled with the energy and spirit that can only come from time spent with family and friends.
