The News from Whispering Pines

A Little Labor, A Lot of Play

The Brewer's were busy this Labor Day Week-End. They spent Saturday sanding and staining the deck on their home at Whispering Pines. The thermometer rose to highs in the 90 degree range making it sweat-inducing labor. There have been much cooler days this summer, but the Brewer's like to wait until summer's end to tackle projects!

Saturday evening Lucille Loftesnes treated Pam and Lenny Brewer and Darrel and Teresa Loftesnes to a local play, "The Last of the Minot Flappers". It was a delightful story about the end of prohibition in Minot. Seems Minot was quite a wild railroad town in those days; with loose women, bootleg booze, Speak Easy's, shoot-outs, crooked law enforcement and politicians for sale. Local actors and actresses did a fine job of bringing that era back to life. Following the play the group went to the Blue Rider, a local pub, to plan the details for a Sunday boat ride. It was decided they would meet at the Brewer home in the morning and motor out to Indian Hills, which is a resort on Lake Sakakawea about 90 miles from Minot.

Accompanying the Brewer's and the Loftesnes' for the boat ride was Whitney Loftesnes, daughter of Darrel and Teresa. The wind was up and there were white caps on the lake, so the group spent the day scooting around and exploring small coves on the edge of the big water. They stopped off at a beautiful site with sand caves to explore. They decided to moor the boat for a lunch of turkey sandwiches, potato chips, grapes and nectarines. They were all much satisfied with this nice lunch and proclaimed there wasn't a nicer picnic area in all of North Dakota!

The day ended with steaks barbecued by Mr. Brewer back home at Whispering Pines. The sun went down and a magnificent harvest moon rose up over the pines in the latter's back yard. The group lit a small fire and roasted marshmallows as they listened to music from the 60' and 70's. It was pronounced a fine day of relaxation and renewal.
