I've been so enamored with Parker Andrew that I've taken little notice of other events happening in the world. Nothing could be as important as the birth of Parker Andrew!
But I did take time out on Saturday to watch the Funeral Mass for Ted Kennedy. I was struck by the dignity and honor he was accorded and the way the press handled the event with respect and decorum. I contrasted it with the press covering Micheal Jackson's death. Micheal Jackson certainly deserved as much respect simply because he was a human being doing his best to survive in this world. He was flawed, as was Ted Kennedy. But as Jesus Christ said, "Whoever is sinless shall throw the first stone." (loose translation) Well, the media is all about throwing stones. But, those of us who watch and listen, and feel superior, feed the mania.
Anyway, I digress. I read a blog that sang the praises of Ted Kennedy. The blogger wrote, "He was all about the spiritual practices of love, compassion, hospitality, joy, justice, kindness, nurturing play and zeal (zest for life). He remembered and honored birthdays, anniversaries, and other personal details of friends and family. He brought vibrancy to others with his wild sense of humor and his vital love of laughter and singing."
So, whatever his political preferences were, whatever his personal flaws were, I honor Ted Kennedy for his commitment to life. He hung in there, he never took the easy way out, he lived until he died. Death, and it's partner, apathy, can be seductive and offer comfort to ease the burden of living. But to embrace life in all of it's complex, crazy, and oftentimes crushing reality is to plant the seeds that sprout, blossom, and go dormant, but never die.
Parker Andrew deserves no less from me.
