October Sunday

What a beautiful and fulfilling day! It's late October and I saw folks in shorts and tank tops at the grocery store. While enjoying it, I have an ominous feeling that winter is just around the bend. I think it's the knowing that makes these late autumn days all the more sweet. The day started with breakfast at our dining room table with David and Jenilee. They were visiting from Fargo for the week-end. How lucky we are to have such delightful young men and women in our lives! Next on the agenda was yard work. It felt sad to pull frozen, dead plants out of the ground, but as I trimmed the perennials I felt hope for them to return in the spring.
We shook the apple tree and raked up the apples that fell to the ground. It seemed wrong to throw away so many apples that could be apple pies or apple crisp or apple dumplings, but we gave them to the horses in our back meadow and I know they will be enjoyed.
Lenny decided to make beef stew to top off our perfect late October day.
Aaahhhh...October.
