On the 3rd of July Mr. and Mrs. Brewer celebrated the 4th of July. Since in North Dakota it's not dark enough to view fireworks until 11PM the Brewer's wanted to enjoy the festivities and not worry about getting up for work the next day. The day started with Lucille Loftesnes and Devan Lang joining Pam Brewer for worship services at Zion Lutheran Church in Minot. After church they stopped at Perkins for a cup of coffee. It's been hard to find a cup of coffee in Minot this week as boil orders and water conservation orders have been in effect. By 11AM Mr. Brewer had the coolers filled with soda, water, beer, and ice and various picnic items and the boat loaded and ready to go. Darrel and Teresa Loftesnes and daughter, Whitney, met at the Brewers' to travel to Fort Stevenson State Park on Lake Sakakawea for a day of picnicking and boating. Also attending was Travis Troxel, friend of Devan Lang.
It has been an extremely slow start to summer, so the young women were anxious to soak up some sun and work on their tans. No amount of preaching about skin cancer and wrinkles deterred them from their sun worshipping. The elders sat in the shade with large sun hats, but recalled their younger days lying on tar roofs slathered in baby oil.
Next on the afternoon's agenda was the thrill of a ride across the lake on an inflated tube. With the sky clear blue and temperatures in the 90's it was perfect weather for "the ride of your life"!
Mr. Darrel Loftesnes acted as spotter for the tubers as Mr. Lenny Brewer captained the boat. After flying over one particularly rough wave, Miss Devan Lang's pink bikini bottoms were seen floating on the surface of the water. With skillful maneuvering of the boat, Mr. Brewer was able to rescue the lost object and restore it to the distraught, but laughing, owner who was skillful in using the water as her cover-up. A potentially disastrous situation was avoided with a daring water rescue that even the US Coast Guard would have been proud of.
After their adventures at the lake the group then re-gathered at Whispering Pines for the evening meal, visiting, playing badminton and more relaxation.
When darkness set in Mr. Brewer lit a bonfire and the fireworks began. The makings for s'mores were brought out and the group sat back to enjoy the show. Neighbors for miles around were also celebrating the 4th on the 3rd, so the sky was lit up all around for more than an hour. The group dispersed around midnight to go to their separate homes. After the trials that friends and neighbors have had with the Souris River flood in the past several weeks not one of the group took for granted the pleasure of spending relaxing and nourishing time with one another.
