The pastor, in his sermon, talked about the "unexpected". He said sometimes we miss the best in life because it's not packaged the way we expect. Because it looks different than we anticipated, we don't see it. Kind of like the Christ Child. A helpless baby born in a manger was not how the Messiah was expected, so people missed him completely. I suppose I miss the Messiah's coming every day of my life. I'm moving too fast, my mind can be full of ruminating, sometimes obsessive thoughts of anxieties and fears. I mistakenly think if I worry enough, then the worst won't happen, whatever that is. This mindset leaves little room to watch for the Messiah. When my eyes are opened and I do see, it's wondrous. The world is full of the Son of God. He was in the children that showed us the Advent lesson this morning. He was in the elderly man who handed me the communion cup and said, "The blood of Christ, shed for you" in a weak, shaky voice. He's in the cancer patient who wants one more Christmas with her children. He's in the moon and the stars and the sun as they steadfastly show up to shine for us and do their job of helping maintain life. I could go on and on, once I start!
Think about that with me this week as we go on our way to Christmas. What unexpected ways does the Savior show up in your life?
