I've believed for quite some time that life is a balance. With that in mind, I thought I'd share one of my humorous times today and one of my serious, sad times.
Made me laugh:
While getting a haircut today at Regis Salon in the Dakota Square Mall, I overheard an intriguing conversation in the chair next to mine. (I had my head half in the sink, so it was hard to hear. It feels so good to have your hair washed). This particular customer next door to me was telling his stylist that the world was going to come to an end in 2012. He evidently had an interest in the topic because it was obvious he had done his homework and found convincing research supporting the theory that the end is coming on 12/12/12. My head was full of suds, but I wanted to shout out, "Name your sources!" I suspected there would be a "dotcom" in the answer. When I finally got rinsed and tilted upright I kept my mouth shut as the polite person I am. I also wanted to ask him if he'd heard of Y2K. He probably still has a garage full of generators. But again, I zipped my lip as there were many sharp objects, scissors and razors to name a few, lying around. The conversation then turned to the rodeo in town this week-end and the end of the world was forgotten. After twirling in the chair with a mirror in hand and pronouncing my haircut satisfactory, I paid my bill with a generous tip for the stimulating (overheard) conversation. Then I decided to take a walk through the mall, show off my new haircut and look for offers of a major purchase with no payment and no interest until 2013!
Made me cry:
The death of a 45 year old woman from Ovarian Cancer. She was diagnosed 10 years ago when I lived here before. When I moved back last fall, I was amazed she was still alive. She was one of those memorable people; full of vitality, creativity, sincerity, optimism, and tenacity. She had lived long past what was expected, but not long enough. She would have been overjoyed to live until 2012. I hate cancer!
