"And Man created the plastic bag and the cellophane wrapper and the paper plate, and this was good because Man could then take his automobile and buy all his food in one place and He could save that which was good to eat in the refrigerator and throw away that which had no further use. And soon the earth was covered with plastic bags and aluminum cans and paper plates and disposable bottles and there was nowhere to sit down or walk, and Man shook his head and cried, "Look at this Godawful mess". ---Art Buchwald, 1970

After a vicious winter, today was a grand day to celebrate the Earth's renewing itself. While raking away dead leaves in a flower bed, I found tiny green sprouts of new growth. I put the rake down, got on my hands and knees, and carefully pushed away decaying debris to allow the tender shoots to reach up towards the sun. I walked the perimeter of our property and picked up a winter's worth of cellophane wrappers, plastic bags, disposable bottles and aluminum cans! I brought a few lawn chairs out from storage in the garage and set them on the back deck. I poured myself a glass of Chardonnay, sat down and cried, "Look at this magnificent piece of the Earth!"
