Old Things; Holding on and Letting Go

I am a lover of all things old. (Except maybe old, dead fish!) I would much rather shop at flea markets and antique shops for household items like furniture, dishes, picture frames, plant pots, doilies...(the list goes on) than at glitzy, shiny new shops. Old things have character, they have a story and a soul and a history. Old things comfort me, they give me a feeling of permanence, steadfastness, and stability. New things are here today and gone tomorrow. They show up with excitement and drama and glamour and, like yesterday's newspaper, they're easily pushed aside for the next fad or fashion or news story that stimulates and excites. Old things stay with me and become more precious as time goes on. I've been told my decorating style is "Old Lady". I didn't know I had a decorating style, I just surround myself with things that comfort me and make me smile inside.

Dresser I found at an antique shop in Casper, WY. Notice the unique curves on the drawers. Love it!

Lenny bought this adorable kerosene lamp for his mother at a sidewalk flea market in Los Angeles years ago when he was working on an off-shore oil rig.

After hunting for an old trunk for several years I found this one at a local flea market. The "hunt" can be the fun part. (The afghan was a wedding gift to Lenny and I knitted by my Aunt Ardy.)

These are my old, holey slippers. I didn't want to get rid of them, but when I spotted a new pair exactly like the old ones, I was able to let go.

It wasn't easy, but I'm slowly falling in love with the new ones!
